Anger is the poor relation of emotions being suppress over the centuries and ignored. It is a fundamental emotion which has many forms. Anger is a completely normal usually healthy human emotion. Anger is often regarded as negative, were are taught that it’s all right to express anxiety, depression or other emotions but not anger. As a result, we don’t learn how to handle it or channel it constructively. It is only when it gets out of control and becomes destructive that it leads to problems. It can effect ones work life, personal life and ones overall quality of life. It can make one feel out of control and at the mercy of an unpredictable and powerful emotion. We as a human race have never been taught how to deal with this emotion, only through suppression which in itself only leads to compounding the feeling. The first step is in Anger Management is to understand what anger is. Anger is an energy which we feel and it makes us want to do something e.g. hit out or break something. The problem is not the anger but the mismanagement of it and therefore a therapist must be aware of the types of anger, the personality types, stages of anger and the symptoms of anger and the possible problems arising from mismanaged anger before they can help the client to deal with their problem.

Why are some people more angry than others.??

Some people are really just more “HOTHEADED” according to J. Deffenbacher PhD. They get angry more easily and more intensely. There are also those who do not show their anger in loud spectacular ways but are chronically irritable and grumpy. Easily angered people don’t always curse and throw things ; sometimes they withdraw sociallysulk or get physically sick.

People who are quick to anger generally have poor tolerance for frustration. They cannot take things in their stride.

Research has also shown that family background plays a role in that people who are easily angered come from families that are disruptive, chaotic and not skilled at emotional communication.
